Biologist checking turtle eggs
After being arrested by police when he was found with 109
turtle eggs in his backpack, a man from Cabo San Lucas will be charged with
crimes against biodiversity.
The trial will take place within the next two months. Until
that time the accused is not allowed to leave the state, and is required to
sign in weekly at the Public Prosecutor’s office.
The theft of turtle eggs is an ongoing problem and is
taken very seriously. Baja California Sur is home to 7 of the world’s 8 species
of sea turtle, and several of these are already endangered.
Most of these species comes to the beaches around Cabo to
nest. And everybody here - tourists and
locals alike - take the protection of the
turtles very seriously. There are lots of conservation projects and turtle
camps. And lots of research done at the Autonomous University of Baja
California.
Coincidentally, one of their professors, Adán
Echeverría-García, wrote an article on Baja’s turtles just last weekend.
Definitely worth a read.
We also have loads of info on turtles right here on the
iTravel-Cabo site. And we regularly cover Cabo’s turtles in our blogs. Check
