Sea lions are a regular sight
around Cabo. Especially the famous Pancho who regularly makes guest appearances
around the Marina. Usually at lunch time.
And although these highly intelligent
creatures all look well fed, and seem plentiful they are actually subject to
Special Protection in Mexico.
Imagine then, the horror then, when
authorities in Michoacán were informed that a baby sea lion had been found in a
cardboard box in the middle of the street. In a city 450 km from the sea. And only two
streets away from Mexico’s third largest zoo.
But the pup was not an escapee. Authorities
firmly believe that the intention was to traffic the baby seal.
The pup is only 3 moths old and currently
needs help feeding. Hopefully, within a few days it will be able to feed on its
own. It will then be transferred to Dolphin Discovery in Cabo for some TLC
before it is released back into the wild.
