Two successful
wildlife saves in Cabo in last few days – a baby northern elephant seal, and a turtle.
Both are endangered species...
A baby northern elephant seal was
successfully rescued, rehabilitated and re-integrated thanks to the combined
efforts of PROFEPA and Cabo Dolphins and Ecology Department
The 18-month-old female was
initially rescued by the Sea Mammal Care Network, after being found stranded on
a beach. She was in a poor state of
health, and was about 40% underweight for a cub of her age.
However, after a good dose of
TLC, Cora (as she was named) was restored to her full health and vigor. And
reached a normal weight of 115kg before her release.
The baby elephant seal is an endangered
species so the successful save of every individual animal is a big deal.
Similarly, a green sea turtle, was
also successfully released. The turtle was spotted on the beach in Loreto, in the
illegal possession of two individuals.
Local police were alerted,
arrested the individuals concerned, and enlisted PROFEPA to assess the turtle’s
health.
After being given a clean bill
of health, the turtle was released back into the waters around La Paz.
Lots of good work is being done
locally in, and around, Cabo to protect turtles, sea lions, sea elephants,
whales and so much more. There are also lots environmental and ecotourism companies
here too.
