The Story of Golf in Cabo
A Golfing Mecca
Cabo is now so famous for world class courses, that people have started to think it’s just like the fishing – it’s always been here. It hasn’t. But the perfect terrain has.
Mountains, deserts and arroyos, combine with the rugged cliff sides of the Pacific Ocean, the sparkling Sea of Cortez, and almost 365 days of blue sky and sunshine to provide the perfect canvas to create some of the world’s best courses.
This is exactly what Los Cabos now has. World class courses, designed by some of the biggest names in golf. Cabo has earned its place as the Mecca of Golf for good reason. Read the whole story below.
The Whole Story
The story begins just a mere 30 years ago. Back in 1987 Club Vidanta – originally known as San Jose Municipal course - opened its doors.
This was followed in 1992 by Jack Nicklaus’ stunning course at Palmilla. The golf world started to pay attention to Cabo. And hasn’t stopped since. Famous designers have created so many award-winning courses it is hard to keep track. (see map)
After Palmills came Rob Dye’s Cabo San Lucas Country Club Course in 1994. Then Robert Trent Junior’s Cabo Real in 1996. Jack Nicklaus returned in 1999 with El Dorado. Next came Tom Fazio’s Querencia in 2000.
Nicklaus added a third course to his name with Club Campestre in 2007. And a fourth in 2009, when he created a composite course with Greg Norman – each designing 9 holes for Puerto Los Cabos course.
The first of the Diamante courses opened in 2009 with the Dunes Course, by Damien Love III. Not content with just one award winning course, Diamante persuaded Tiger Woods to design EL Cardonal - which opened in 2014. The spectacular Chileno Bay Course also opened its doors in 2014.
In 2015, Nicklaus reappeared to design the famous Quivira Course (which has already won a pile of awards). And last but not least, in 2016, Diamante opened the 12–hole Oasis short course, also designed by Tiger Woods.
