We keep a close watch on all Cabo’s turtles and regularly
post updates on turtle troubles, turtle tracking, turtles nests, and turtle conservation.
All things turtle, really.
And back at the beginning of October we reported on Cabo’s
first traveling turtle – Rayito – as she set off with a satellite transmitter
attached to her back.
Well, on Saturday Cabo’s second travelling turtle - Bella
– set off. Again, with a satellite transmitter attached to her back. The idea
is that the transmitters will allow us to learn more about the lifestyle of
these species.
“ The transmitters will provide a huge amount of knowledge
about the behavior and lifestyle of the Olive Ridley sea turtle “ says Graciela Tiburcio,
Director of Natural Resources and Wildlife – “where they stay, their interactions
with other turtles of different species, their feeding and nesting places, their
migratory routes, and possibly the routes of other species too”.
The tracking program, part of the Program for Protection
of the Sea Turtle, is a joint effort between Cabo’s Hilton Hotel (which has their own Turtle Protection Program), the Pedregal
Resort, and the Technological Institute of Higher Studies of Monterrey.
A third turtle, Xareni, is also being tracked.
