Here’s the scoop from local surfers and travelers that have visited Cabo to surf its breaks after Odile.
While hurricane Odile brought lots of devastation on land, the surfing in the area seems to have gotten even better. Sand breaks have settled in a way that waves are going to be faster and longer. “We got some of the best surf in the last 10 years in the last few weeks; it was constant with good size swells. It’s going to be an awesome season!” said one local fresh from the ocean.
One of the great things about Cabo is that you get to surf all year long with dozens of spots only an hours drive away; normally surfers favor the Sea of Cortes from May – October and then the Pacific from November – March.
While the season on Cortes is pretty much over, the strong northern swells are coming, and local surfers and visitors are getting ready to surf the Pacific (Cerritos, San Pedrito, La Pastora among other surf spots to the Northwest of Cabo) and they are excited to see how the sand has settled and the changes that will make to their favourite spots.
The local surfers hanging out on the beach all have big smiles after epic, un-crowded surf sessions with plenty of time to choose that perfect wave.
This is what two of them told us jokingly and in an attempt to selfishly keep more waves to themselves:
“Now that Cabo is back to normal and the tourists are returning, people should go out and play golf and go shopping more, not surf. The surf might look amazing, but it’s dangerous out there; Odile must have brought in some white sharks and they only eat tourists so we Choyeros should keep surfing alone until it is safe! ”
Don't listen to them! Com on down and bring your board or rent one here: the surf is up and it is fantastic!
