As of 9pm, Fri August 11, the National
Hurricane Centre issued the first weather advisory for Tropical Storm Jova.
Jova was born as the remnants of
Hurricane Franklin strengthened sufficiently in the Pacific to earn a new Eastern
Pacific name. The smae thing happened last year, as Hurricane Earl dissipated, and less
than 24 hours later became Tropical Storm Javier.
At present Jova is 435 km south-southeast
of Cabo. Showers are very likely to start later this evening.
The port remained open all day,
but closed tonight at 8pm for smaller boats. High waves are forecast which may
affect fishing and water activities tomorrow. So, if you were planning on
fishing best check with your charter company. The situation will be reviewed
first thing in the morning.
Of course, the high waves will
also cause restrictions on the beaches so please check before heading to the
surf tomorrow.
Although there is no alert in
place, just to be on the safe side, the Council of Civil Protection (which
includes municipal, state, and federal authorities) is ready to jump into action
at a moment’s notice. This is the first time this season they have been deployed.
Don’t panic . Nobody is
expecting a hurricane. Bob Henson, a meteorologist and blogger with Weather
Underground, said -
“Tropical Storm Jova will
encounter a less conducive atmosphere for development, and it is unlikely that
we will see a Hurricane Jova.”
