A 35-year-old Canadian citizen, named by the Attorney General as Jennifer Carren, has died in Cabo San Lucas on March 11th after a Gray Whale crashed into the vessel in which she was whale watching as part of a tour of 24 people. The accident occurred toward the end of a tour as the vessel was returning to Cabo San Lucas, near Santa Maria beach and two other people sustained injuries.
In a statement, local company Cabo Adventures, who ran the trip have said, "The incident occurred toward the end of our Snorkel & Sea tour. The captain had to make a movement to avoid a whale that had surfaced just in front of the boat. It then hit one side of the boat, leaving two people injured and another passenger hurt who, unfortunately, later died in hospital.”
Following this extremely rare incident, the captain of the boat 'The Naval Sector', turned the vessel around to pick up the woman who had fallen into the water. One of tour guides jumped into the water to rescue her and a crew member who is a qualified nurse, quickly provided first aid, the company said.
Port captain, Vicente Martínez, confirmed that the woman died as a result of her injuries after a whale jumped and landed on the boat with other passengers whilst traveling back to Cabo San Lucas at around 11:00 hours on Wednesday.
Navy personnel provided assistance to the tourist, who was taken to a local hospital immediately after the accident but unfortunately she died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family at this time.
