BCS surf team in opening parade
Cabo’s National Surfing Tournament got off to a great
start on Tuesday with the inaugural “Ceremony of the Sands “ – a ritual for opening
every surf tournament, national or international. Where surfers all bring sand from their own country
or state to mix together as a symbol of unity.
In this national competition each of the 12 participating
Mexican states paraded the streets of San Jose del Cabo before the sand
ceremony. Over 200 surfers in all.
The competing began early yesterday morning and will continue
until Sunday. Events are taking place on three of Cabo’s beaches - Costa Azul,
La Roca and La Bocana.
Luis Skeen de Alba, president of the Mexican Federation of
Surfing, has christened Cabo as the surf capital of Mexico. This is because it
the third major surf competition to be held in Cabo this year – after the National Youth Championships in June,
and the international Los Cabos Open of Surf
in July.
"This is unprecedented, never in the history of 54
years of surfing in Mexico, no state has hosted events in the same year, apart from
Los Cabos, home to the World Los Cabos Open of Surfing. So we can say that
right now Los Cabos is the capital of surfing in Mexico, " Alba said.
Alba invited everyone in Cabo to come and enjoy the competition
and support Mexico’s top surfers. Reminding everyone that these surfers are
also top athletes. Surfing is now an Olympic sport. And Cabo is the perfect
place to practice and compete in this sport.
