Police in La Paz have just announced that only one year after
introducing random breathalyzer checks they have managed to reduce the number
of alcohol related car accidents by 37%.
Throughout the year, 72 teams have breathalyzed over 20
000 drivers at various locations in and around La Paz.
Director of Roads and Transportation, Julio Cesar
Mendoza, considers the program - “Operativos de Alcoholimetría” - a huge success. And has now decided that it
will be permanently in place in La Paz.
Fingers crossed that the recent crackdown in Cabo over
drunk driving will be equally successful in the first year. Right now, random
breathalyzer tests are only being conducted at weekends.
