Tropical Storm Odile Update

Date Published:
Cabo weather - tropical storm Odile

Tropical Storm Odile Expected to Become Category 3 Hurricane but is Moving Away from Cabo

Tropical Storm Odile is beginning to intensify and will not only become a hurricane relatively soon, but is expected to be a Category 3 Hurricane within 3 days.

The initial storm track for Odile was projecting a direct hit to Cabo San Lucas. However, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) explained that the storm has made a rather erratic shift to the west-southwest over the past 24 hours. Odile is expected to begin moving to the northwest northwestward within 12-24 hours. If the NHC projections hold, it appears that this erratic movement has saved Cabo from the direct hit.

The current storm track projects a similar path to the one taken by Hurricane Norbert last week. Norbert brought wind, rain and huge swells but did not cause much damage. Hurricane Norbert passed Cabo as a Category One Hurricane. Odile is expected to pass by as a Category 3 Hurricane.

Storms are not always as predictable as we would like, as evidenced by the "erratic" behavior that has thankfully shifted the storm track west of Los Cabos. In addition, the NHC is still uncertain as to the potential size of the wind and rain bands the storm may bring the Cabo area. Though it appears that Cabo is no longer in the danger zone it is always prudent to stay informed and take necessary safety precautions. Odile may have little effect on Cabo, but a Category 3 storm still holds the potential for heavy rains and flooding.

iTravel Cabo will post updates as the come available.
