Norbert Intensifies, Expected to Become Hurricane Tonight
3:00 PM MDT/Cabo Local Time
Tropical Storm Norbert is expected to become Hurricane Norbert tonight. The storm, located approximately 230 miles south of Cabo San Lucas (see animated satellite images below), has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Norbert will almost definitely intensify during the next 1-2 days and is now expected to reach Category 2 Hurricane status. Maximum sustained winds are expected to peak at 105 mph within 36 hours – during the time Norbert will be closest to Cabo. This could make Norbert a borderline Category 3 Hurricane (110 mph sustained winds).
The storm track runs parallel to the Baja Peninsula. The Mexican government has issued a tropical storm warning for the southern Baja including the entire Los Cabos region. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE WARNING AREA, IN THIS CASE WITHIN 24 HOURS. This warning may be converted to a hurricane watch or warning as Norbert intensifies.
Tropical storm force winds are expected to affect Cabo by Thursday afternoon. Rainfall of 3-5 inches is expected through Friday. Flash flooding can occur in these conditions, so if you will be in Los Cabos during the storm it is best not to travel on the roads. Large swells and dangerous surf conditions will also be present.
Updates will be posted to iTravel as they come available.
