The
world famous National Marine Park at Cabo Pulmo may again be under threat from
developers. The Cabo Cortes project, which was canceled in 2012 by then President
of Mexico Felipe Calderon, has now been reactivated, according to Armando
Sanchez, Pres Sos BCS. This follows an order given by the Colegiado to SEMARNAT
which requires a resolution of the issue, one way or another.
A
spokesperson for SEMARNAT BCS Management said: “The environmental impact and risk has meant that
we issued a document denying the permit to proceed as well as expressing our
dissatisfaction with the resolution.”
The
Cabo Cortes project includes more than 3 thousand hotel rooms, more than 7000
homes, golf courses and a marina.
In May, SEMARNAT announced the rejection
of the Golden Cape project because of its negative environmental impact. This
would have been built near the Marine National Park which has caused major
concern from environmentalists who claim that it could bring serious damage to
the rich ecosystem and the unique marine life which includes the largest coral
reef in the Eastern Pacific.
Armando
Sanchez Pres. Sos BCS, said, “This project is a major threat to the marine
park of Cabo Pulmo. What they are intending is growing out of control “
It is always
the case: people find a wild and beautiful place and decide to develop it so
others can enjoy the wildness…thereby destroying what made the place unique and
beautiful in the first place. When you consider just how much development is
going in in Los Cabos and how much land remains to be developed, why can’t
there still be room for Cabo Pulmo to remain as it is?
