How to prepare for a hurricane

  

It’s easy to panic in an emergency. But at least with storms you get some warning, so planning ahead is possible. Here is list of hints and tips to get you started. All just common sense really…

Before you go

Insurance

Make sure your holiday insurance covers natural disasters.

Resort Disaster Policy

Find out what the hotel/resort’s policy is in the event of a natural disaster before making full payment on a vacation.

Airline

Check in with your airline regularly, and find out if they have any evacuation plans if a storm is imminent.

When you are there

Weather Warning

Always pay attention to wind and weather warnings leading up to the storm.

Avoid Risks

Don’t take unnecessary risks on the beach.

Comminicate

Always tell someone where you are going.

Essentials

Have a supply of water, cash and non-perishable food.

Eletronic Devices

Charge your cell phones and PEDs.

Numbers

Have a list of all important phone numbers – family, friends, neighbours, emergency services, etc.

Documents

Keep your passport, ID and any other important documents with you.

Advice

Follow all advice/instruction from your resort/hotel manager.

Post storm

Help

As much as you can, and whoever you can

If you are in a villa/apartment

Plan

Create a hurricane / evacuation plan with your family.

Shelters

Learn location of emergency shelters in your area.

Secure

Everything that could blow away - inside or outside.

Windows

Fasten with storm shutters, or use plywood to board up the windows.

Fuel

Make sure your vehicles have plenty of fuel, and park in the garage if possible.

Electronic Devices

Charge your cell and PED.

Numbers

Have a list of all important phone numbers – family, friends, neighbours, emergency services, etc.

Prepare

Have a bag packed in case of evacuation.

Documents

Keep your passport, and ID with you.

When the storm hits

Keep Updated

Tune in to the TV/ radio/social media channels to keep updated.

Comply

Follow the directions of authorities if an evacuation is mandated.

Turn Off Utilities

Including water, electricity and propane tanks if directed.

Stay Inside

At all times, close interior doors, secure exterior doors.

Stay Away From Windows

Find a room without windows, and take shelter there. If that is not possible, go into a closet
