After an investment
of 7.5 million pesos, the first phase of the reconstruction and refurbishing of
Santiago Zoo will be completed in May.
Santiago is located about 35 miles from San José del Cabo in
Baja California Sur. (23 miles north of the Los Cabos International Airport) so
is in easy driving distance from Los Cabos. The zoo features botanical gardens
and has on display most of the wildlife of the Baja region.
The Director of Public Works and Human Settlement, Alejandro
Rosas Canedo , reported that the upgrades were being done on the recommendation
of SEMARNAT and PROFEPA to improve the site.
Among the improvements are upgrades to enclosures, building an emergency veterinary
care unit for the animals, new administrative offices, perimeter fencing
throughout the area and construction of new washrooms for zoo visitors.
In addition to this investment, Canedo Rosas said the
Federal Government has undertaken a comprehensive project consisting of an ecological
park which also includes a botanical garden and areas for local wildlife. This
larger project cost 75 million pesos.
