After several weeks of discussion, the State Congress
last week decided in favor of the imposition of a tourist tax on all visitors
to Cabo. The tax - 350 MXN
- is likely to be about $17. Cruise passengers will be exempt as they
are in town for less than the required 24 hours.
The controversial tax has caused a lot of debate and many
people are not happy. Criticisms have been made over the lack of consultation –
namely with business, hotels and tourist organizations.
The tax will come into effect in 2017, and the State
Governor says the 180 days prior to implementation gives plenty time to consult
on the detail with all concerned.
It is not yet clear how, when or where the tax will be
collected. Nor is it known how the money will be redistributed, or how the
effects will be evaluated.
Calls have been made for at least 60% of the monies
collected to be distributed directly back to infrastructure and security
projects in Cabo. Both of which would have a direct benefit to the locals and
tourists alike.
