Despite spending several hours foundering
unattended on El Dorado beach on Sunday, the stranded 10m baby male sperm whale
was successfully guided back to deeper waters.
The whale was seen stranded and
wounded on the beach by many of the guests of the nearby El Dorado and Marquis
Hotels.
Fortunately the baby whale was
rescued alive in a joint effort, coordinated by PROFEPA, involving the Navy
(SEMAR), the local company Cabo Expeditions, the Municipal Civil Protection and
the Hotel El Dorado.
It is thought the baby whale
became disorientated while swimming in the surrounding coastal area, causing it
to get beached in shallow waters. By using a boat to lead it back to the
correct depths the whale was able to get re-orientated and head back to its natural
habitat.
This species of sperm whale
(Physeter macrocephalus) is listed under the category subject to special
protection (Profepa).
