Yesterday we
reported on Cabo’s new tourist tax that will come into effect in 2017.
As we said,
lots of people are upset about this. And yesterday, the Secretary General for
the Gastronomic Union, Alberto Rentería, added his voice to the general
dissent.
Rentería is deeply
concerned that the tax will inevitably have a negative impact on foreign
visitors, discouraging them from coming to Cabo – “It is the only municipality
in Mexico that is going to be charging money,
so I think there will be an impact on the tourist influx."
He says the tax
of 350 peso will generate a huge amount of money, and this money must come back
to Cabo and be spent on projects - like
public works - that benefit the local citizens.
