Cabo harbor master, Vicente Martínez , has warned that in the coming hours a phenomenon known as
Mar de Fondo will affect the waters around Los Cabos and has suspended some
water activities.
The phenomenon causes waves two to three meters high, and
could last for 48-72 hours. Certain restrictions on navigation will be issued ,
however the total closure of the port is unlikely.
"This pulse of swell has been predicted to lasts 48 to
72 hours ... today we have suspended activities on Lover’s Beach, at the
tip of Cabo San Lucas," the official said.
The swell is due to the movement of waves which have spread
outside the area where they were generated and has no connection with local
wind patterns, although its cause could be high winds that originated in a
different area .
The maritime community are advised to be aware of possible
restrictions and to remain vigilant.
Surfers, however, anticipate a fantastic weekend ahead!
