Hurricane Norbert Nears Cabo San Lucas
Hurricane Norbert Approaches Cabo, Nearing Peak Intensity
3:00 PM MDT/Cabo Local Time
Hurricane Norbert is approximately 130 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) believes that the storm is very close to its peak intensity. Norbert will soon begin to pass into cooler waters and begin to slowly weaken.
This is good news for Los Cabos. It means that Norbert will not reach Category 2 Hurricane status. Recent predictions had the storm nearing Category 3 status with winds of 105 mph.
Los Cabos has received several periods of brief but torrential rains, beginning just after midnight and throughout the day. No significant damage has been reported in Los Cabos.
However, it is important to remember that the storm is still tracking parallel to the Baja peninsula and will be closest to Cabo in late Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Norbert will still be a Category 1 Hurricane at this point. Cabo remains under a Tropical Storm Watch during this period, meaning heavy rains and tropical storm force winds will affect the area. Dangerous waves, flash flooding, landslides and minor road collapse are possible. Arroyos (dry river beds) can fill quickly and even small amounts of flowing water can be dangerous.
Updates will be posted to iTravel as they come available.
