How Can You Really Help The Kids That Are Selling Stuff on the Streets of Cabo?

In the fall of 2010, The Amigos de Cabo (Friends of Cabo), which is the association of downtown Cabo San Lucas merchants, held a meeting to address the problems created by so called, ''Chiklet kids''; children who sell gum and souvenirs in all parts of the city at all hours of the day and night. The city's police commander; Daniel Rodriguez, the town's president of the Lawyers Association; Blanca Hernandez, and representatives from the Children/Parents Association, Director of Tourism, local pre-school teachers as well as the president of the government agency, DIF; a charity whose focus is low income family related issues, were all in attendance trying to hammer out a resolution to solve this problem. Even the state's human rights office and director of PAMAR; the local office in charge of the protection of women and children, and Marlene Gomez from the state's district attorneys office were on hand to lend their support towards finding an answer to this pressing issue. The group discussed how to deal with the more than 100+plus kids that are out on the street at all hours of the day and night, since there is no current law that could be used to curb the street-hustling epidemic. At best, it was agreed all any police official could do is impound their meager merchandise. In one instance, a month after the meeting, local officials rounded up some of the children and their parents, which led to unexpected chaos at the office with parents and kids screaming and crying. Some children went so far as to escape through an office window. All families present that day were offered assistance in the form of money to cover all of the kids' school expenses and job placement assistance for every parent. Of everyone present, only one parent showed up days later to claim the agency's assistance. The argument many parents lean on, is that no job can replace the possible $30-$40 US dollars their children...
