A few lucky tourists were this week treated to the rare
sighting of an “angel of the sea” – an enormous manta ray.
A delighted diver said “it was near the island of Cerralvo,
at the end of the dive, we found a giant manta ray, she stayed with us for 5
minutes. It's really huge, the saw as 8 meters and could weigh about 3,000
pounds (...) We were in the middle and she was making circles; we saw very
well, actually, we saw everything, her eyes, her abdomen, everything. Absolutely
everything, It was fantastic.”
Not seen in these waters since 2002 the sighting has caused
a lot of excitement. And has led to hopes that it will increase tourist diving
in the Sea of Cortez.
To see giant mantas divers normally head to the island of
San Benedicto, part of the Archipelago Revillagigedo which is located 390
kilometers southwest of Los Cabos. Having giant manta rays in the Sea of Cortez would definitely open up
more possibilities for divers and tour operators.
