Although they absolutely shouldn’t, some Cabo restaurants
still offer Dorado (also called Mahi Mahi) and even Marlin on their menus.
With commercial fishing of these species banned, and only
controlled quotas allowed for sportfishing these fish shouldn’t be appearing on
ANY menus. But they do.
And much to the frustration of Enrique Fernandez del
Castillo, President of the Association of Billfish, CONAPESCA seem to do very
little. He wants to see quicker change and to stop these fish being caught and
sold. And he wants to see CONAPESCA becoming a whole lot more effective.
Of course this may take time. And we all need to do our
bit.
So, if you are in Cabo and the “catch of the day” is looking
just a little too fishy - be it Dorado, Mahi Mahi, or Marlin - don’t buy it. No
matter how mouthwatering or tempting.
