Death of Cabo turtles continue

Date Published:

Despite the 3 month fishing ban that has been imposed on the fishermen of Ulloa deaths of loggerhead turtles continue.

It has repeatedly been argued that the prime reason for the death of the loggerheads has been getting  caught in fishing nets. But this is not a universally held view. And Governor Carlos Mendoza Davis, says the continuing deaths are evidence to the contrary.

Both he, and local politician Deputy Venustiano Pérez Sanchez, agree that -“The only way to prove that fishermen are not responsible for this problem is a scientific study validated by national and international authorities to say what are the causes of the mortality of turtles."

Sanchez points out that the local fisherman were the first to accept the conditions imposed by the authorities so that the causes of mortality can be identified.  And argues that the authorites - Semarnat, Profepa and Conapesca  - are thereby obliged to conduct a full scientific study to establish  the underlying causes for the mass mortality of the loggerhead turtles.
