Everyone has heard of Baja’s beautiful Balandra beach - last
year voted Mexico’s "best" beach by USA Today.
Located just outside La Paz, the pearl white sands of
Balandra frame a turquoise lagoon bounded by rust colored hills. It is a
beautiful natural setting and home to the famous El Hongo. The mushroom shaped
rock that has come to symbolize La Paz in the same way The Arch does for Cabo
San Lucas.
Well guess what - there
will now be an entry charge to Balandra beach. An announcement yesterday by
CONANP confirms that all visitors over 6 years old, who are not residents of La
Paz will be liable. The 32 peso charge is in keeping
with Rights Collection Program, which charges a small fee for entry and activities
in all areas of natural protection
(ANP).
As the beach is part of the Balandra Flora and Fauna Protection
Area (APFF Balandra), the charge will apply. (Another example of an ANP with an
entry charge, is Isla Espiritu Santo).
Visitors will be required to purchase and wear the $32 peso bracelet as proof of payment.
A small price, for entry to such a beautiful place.
An unbelievable six of USA Today’s 10 Best Mexican Beaches are to be found in Baja California Sur. Four are in Los Cabos and two in La Paz.
