As if our favorite rocker wasn’t already famous enough,
Sammy Hagar, along with Adam Levine, have invented a new drink, mixing tequila and
mezcal to make the 'World's First Mezquila'.
Far from being a carefully planned product development
the pair accidentally stumbled upon the idea when having dinner together in
Cabo back in 2015.
Apparently, they had been drinking tequila but had been
given a glass of mezcal by their bartender. Finding the switch of drinks just a
tad overpowering, and not wishing to be offensive, they poured the mezcal into
their tequila glasses. And guess what - they kinda liked the taste. And the
idea for Mezquila was born. Or so the story goes….
Anyway, already a bit of a drink connoisseur, Sammy
contacted the Mexican distillery that originally worked with him to make his
Cabo Wabo Tequila. And voila - after several
different attempts by third generation master distiller, Juan Eduardo Nunez - “Santo
Mezquila” was launched last Friday for $55 a bottle.
The new business partners definitely seem quite pleased
with themselves - “It comes on like tequila and you smell a little bit of smoke
in it, but is toned down to where you get a sweet finish,” Hagar said. “It’s
taking tequila to another level. When you blend the two you get a higher
spirit, a brand-new taste.”
And Levine reckons it’s the perfect after dinner drink - "smooth,
full agave, rich tequila flavor with a touch of smoky-sweetness that you can only
find with mezcal – perfect for sipping,"
Basically, the suggestion is that the new product represents
the "first quality blend of different agave distillates to hit the
market." As tequila is produced using 100% blue agave, whereas mezcal can
be made from any agave plant.
We reckon if it’s as good as their music, it must be
worth a try. And with all that recent rocking on the 5th Annual Rock
Legends Cruise, some after dinner sipping may be just the thing for the Red Rocker,
Mr Hagar himself.
