The new Cabo foreign tourist tax to be used as development lever. And will fund social infrastructure projects like housing, lighting, and security...
The impending new tourist tax in
Cabo has been hotly debated over the last 6 months. Should it be charged, how should
it be collected, and most importantly how should it be spent.
Well, here’s the thing. It is
happening, For sure. It may be collected via hotels, or via the airlines. It’s
still not entirely clear how. or when collection of the tax will begin. But BCS Tourism Secretary, Genaro Ruiz, has
been very clear on how it will be spent.
“We cannot have a top -level
luxury, tourist destination, if local services are at a third world level. The
City Hall has big needs - social infrastructure projects, security, desalination plants, health, housing,
and lighting are all needed.”
The state government has agreed
that use of the funds will be completely transparent, and they will be held
accountable for all spending.
With a projected arrival this
year of 1.8 million tourists in Los Cabo, the 350 peso per person tax could raise
as much $630 million pesos per year (almost $34 million US dollars at current rates).
If the Governor is true to his
word, a lot could be done with this money. It’s less than $20 for you as a
tourist. But it could be the difference
of a house or a school for a kid here in Cabo.
