Cabo’s 5th International Film Festival drew to
a close last night in a star- studded award ceremony that recognized Mexican,
US, British, Canadian and Colombian talent. Actors, directors and cinematographers.
Among the many award categories - “American Honey” won the Best Film in the Los Cabos Competition. A road movie about a teen runaway who takes up with a
travelling youth crew. Winner of the jury
prize at Cannes earlier this year, American Honey is British writer-director
Andrea Arnold’s first U.S. feature.
The migrant movie ‘X500’ directed by Juan Andrés Aranga, took
the prize for the Mexican First Section. The movie, a drama, is a portrait of
three young migrants living in different parts of the Americas.
Director Lucia Carrera's film “Tamara and Catarina” grabbed two awards - winning the Best Mexican Film Award, and the Art Kingdom Trailer Award.
And the Los Cabos’ Audience Award went to “Beauties of the Night”
(Bellas de Noche), director Maria Jose Cuevas’ portrait of Mexican showgirls
who performed in the 1970s.
Tributes also went to filmmaker Oliver Stone and
Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Passengers). And a lifetime
achievement award was given to Italian actress Monica Bellucci, who stars in
the Emir Kusturica dramedy "On the Milky Road".
Also recognized with a career achievement award was
Mexican producer Alex Garcia (Desierto), recipient of the Winston Baker and
Hollywood Reporter Visionary Award.
The final screeing of the festival was of the Matt
Ross-directed comedy “Captain Fantastic” featuring Viggo Moretensen.
