Last week’s
conservation conference in Cabo was a tremendous success.
The conference was focused on the research and conservation
projects in the Sea of Cortex.
Hosted by the Autonomous University of Baja California
Sur (UABCS), it was a joint effort between the XIV Congress of the Association
of Researchers of the Sea of Cortez and the seventh National Symposium on the
Sea of Cortez.
Dr. Hector Reyes Bonilla, a marine ecologist and
researcher at UABCS said - “there isn’t a gulf on the planet where more
scientific research is carried out than in the Sea of Cortez.”
He highlighted the fact that conservation projects here have
influenced projects across the world – especially in creating and managing protected
areas.
And he also pointed out the vital role that young students
and researchers play in this work – allowing scientific research to be less dependent
on government institutions moving forward.
The aim of the conference was to bring together scientists
and academics from Mexico and across the world to share knowledge and experience
and forge new working partnerships.
The 4 day conference included lectures, seminars and workshops
on oceanography, zoology, aquaculture, genetics, fishery and tides.
