Damages wreaked by hurricane Odile finally fade as Palmilla, Chileno and Santa Maria beaches are all re awarded blue flag status.
Arturo Diaz Joaquin Rivers, the National Coordinator of Blue Flag, confirmed that an evaluation of the beaches achieved 90% compliance with the 33 Blue Flag criteria. This means re-raising the flags and maintaining certification of these coastlines – hugely important for the health and wealth of Los Cabos.
The success is a credit to Zofemat - The Coordination of Federal Maritime Zone of Los Cabos - who have worked tirelessly to bring the beaches back to their previous high standard. Holmos Francisco Montaño, the coordinator Zofemat, said "..we can continue with the badge that gives tourism competitiveness, without altering our environment beaches," he said.
Beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based status based on compliance with 33 criteria covering 4 key areas - environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services. Blue Flags are awarded for only one season at a time. If the criteria are not fulfilled during the season or the conditions change, the Blue Flag may be withdrawn.
