Despite downpours delaying
the start of the tennis tournament Abierto Los Cabo has got off to a great
start.
Double matches were
played on Tuesday to make up for losing a day on Monday to heavy rains by
tropical storm Javier.
And the excitement is
now ramping up. The biggest surprise so far has been the knockout of Australian
Bernard Tomic. Ranked at number 20 in the world, and favorite for this
tournament debut, he was beaten by Serbian Dusan Lajovic (# 72) 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
Later in a tough match
the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez (# 18) defeated 18 year old American, Reilly
Opelka, in two sets 6-3, 7-6. The 34 year old Spanish left-hander will now go
to the next round as the remaining top-ranked player and new favorite to win.
Santiago Giraldo
defeated Sam Querrey in two straight sets. And the Croation Ivo Karlovic beat German
Mischa Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Other notable two set wins were Nicolas Almagro who
beat fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia, and
Marcel Granollers who beat Tobias Kamke.
Sadly no Mexicans got through
to the next round as the national duo formed by Hans Hach and Luis Patino were
bowed down by the Spanish Nicolas Almagro and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner in
two sets, double 6-4.
Today’s matches begin
at 5pm - tickets are still available.
