It’s been a fun week down at RedRum!! The week slowly progressed as far as the fishing went, the weather upper 80’s – mid 90’s and crystal clear skies! All in all it was a pretty solid week of fishing.
The week started with a surprising visit from a couple of Dorado caught on Top Gun by Jeff Turic and his group. Surprising because we haven’t seen much Mahi around as of lately. Glad to see them show up! Jack Crevalles kept the inshore bite consistent as you can recall from last weeks report. We got to meet Karen Owens from the CCA – TX Lower Colorado group this week. Great people!! They fished hard and enjoyed Alex on El Nuevo for 2 days. They even left Tiffany with an awesome gift in the office; let’s just say it was a bottle more than half full and aged 12 years!!! We like gifts like that down here!!!
Here’s where the real excitement starts! As we all know, most anglers love to catch Yellow Fin Tuna. There are several reasons for this; one, it tastes phenomenal, especially when our boys make fresh sashimi on the boats seconds after catching them, they put up an excellent fight and they are beautiful fish to get photographed with! Starting Tuesday, the Tuna bite was on fire! ReelRum caught their limit of YFT two days in a row with the Retting group! Alex and Charlie on El Nuevo added to the bite by collecting 3 nice size Tunies as well as a dorado with Kayla Kutin and her group. RedRum also threw in 2 bag limits and a Dorado after heading out 26 miles and finding a school of porpoise. The school of porpoise was holding a lot of bait which means a pretty large feeding frenzy! TioPato and Jesus on Rum Runnin and Never Give Up added plenty more Tuna to the days tally. It’s good to see the RedRum crew working together and help each other find the fish! Thank you McClains and Mr. and Mrs. Kim for coming back to see us as well!
Jeremy Sila and Mark Judis continued the Tuna hunt on the 24th while fishing on Rum Runnin. Jesus and Jesus landed 6 YFT and were able to catch and release Marks first Marlin. They also added the Boyd’s to their group on Friday the 26th and caught and released another Stripe Marlin and 4 more tuna to the table! A few more Dorado were around closer to shore today as well.
Randy Rockwell, Mark Blatt and Tyler Cantley aboard ReelRum got into a mess of Tuna on Thursday, just as the previous few days would have predicted! These boys were scheduled for a 5 hour charter but changed their minds to fish a full day after all the fun they had with the tuna, naturally they added icing to their cake by catching and releasing a Marlin!! Yvonne Ruiz brought her daughter Nicole and niece Cassidy down to Cabo for a week of fun and a little bit of fishing! They were glad they decided to sprinkle a little fishing in with RumRunnin! Jesus had a blast putting them on 9 Tuna and hooked them into a Marlin that after a short fight spit the hook! A few more dorado scattered around mixing in with the steady Tuna bite going off.
Leading into the weekend the Tuna bite was good, not great and the Marlin bite stayed strong. Ron, Kelli, Bailey and Corie Connell caught 8 Tuna and released a Big Marlin with Juan on Tantrum. The Vela party, the Mongolds and the Suttis all ended their trips with at least 1 Stripe Marlin released. We always appreciate our anglers practicing conservation when it comes to release of all billfish!
After Hurricane Odile ruined Mike Timins original plans to come down and fish with us he was glad he waited out the storm! He and his group from the Pearland Chapter of CCA fished two days on El Nuevo. Day 1, mucho Tuna! Day 2 mucho Marlin!! Great job guys! The fishing stayed strong through the weekend. More Tuna were caught as well as Marlin across the board. Colleens Magic led the pack on Saturday with 7 YFT and 3 Stripe Marlin released with Brian Hurst and his group. John Khau had the Catch of the Week aboard, one guess…..yep!! ReelRum and Ramon! They landed a nice 150+ lb Tuna 29 miles out along with 3 other 50 + pounders! They Layon part caught their limit on Tuna as well.
Finishing off our weekend was the Tesch group from CCA Columbus, Live Oak. Talk about some nice people!! These folks fished aboard Adrenaline and made friends with the crew. Who couldn’t befriend a crew that will put you on 6 Tuna day 1 and 3 Marlin on day 2!? Great work guys!
There are plenty of signs of good fishing in our sight! There are reports of Blue Marlin in the area, Yellowfin Tuna are still plentiful and we are hoping that the Dorado bite picks up.
If you haven’t made your summer plans yet, put Cabo and RedRum on your to-do list. We have been enjoying seeing kids on summer vacation being able to come down and spend time with their parents on the water. There is no better place to make memories and have fun than on a boat in Baja with the RedRum family!
