Redrum Cabo Fishing Report July 17th

Date Published:

We pick up after ending last week with a Grand Slam aboard a RedRum boat. This week the Lazzari family from San Antonio picked up right where we left off! They fished aboard Colleens Magic and had a phenomenal day that included Stripe Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi. Caleb Lazzari, the coordinator of the trip has already been sending us referrals as well as getting himself booked up for a trip later this year! True anglers from Texas! See you soon Caleb! Fellow TCU Horned Frogs, Austin and Brian Happel put their luck to the test and fish aboard Tantrum for a half day. They were able to hook into a Marlin but unfortunately lost the fish early in the fight. The Marmaros fished on our 35’ Cabo 19’s Toy for a half day and were able to catch a Yellowfin and a mahi release!

Mid week, Rick Rhoads and his party fished aboard 3rd Degree. The group caught and released 2 Stripe Marlin brought 3 Tuna to the boat and released several small Dorado. A day later El Nuevo caught and released a large Sailfish and was able to find a small school of Tuna for his anglers! Jeff Douglas and his sons Brian, Kevin and Quinn fished on RedRum. They found some good looking water up on the Pacific side and decided to start looking. Shortly after they found a school of porpoise that was holding some decent sized Tuna under them. The Douglas’ were able to wrestle a few of them to the boat and with a little bit of luck caught some Dorado as well! Great work guys!

RumRunnin added to the weekly Dorado purse with 5 good sized bulls on Thursday. Texas Boys “Coach” and “Boog” aka “Moko” ended their 3 days fishing with us. Although they didn’t have as much action as they’ve had in previous years they always had smiles on their faces in the mornings and on the way back to the docks. Our buddy and local fisherman Troy took Matt Ipsen out for a day on RedRum. Troy sure put Matt to the test and the crew was able to catch their limit of YellowFin! Tantrum caught a yellowfin early in the morning and had a quiet afternoon until, on their way back in, hooked into and released a 200 lb Blue Marlin!! Patience pays off sometimes!!

The weekend started off great for the fleet with lots of Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Marlin being caught. The Gows on RedRum caught over 7, the Titan group brought in another half dozen, 19’s Toy with more of the Titan Group brought in Tuna, Dorado and Marlin! Even the Pangas were working hard today, as Brian Anderson and his buddy Jay Perez fished with Felipe and caught 3 big Roosterfish, 1 Bull Dorado and also a Hammerhead! TopGun and Never Give Up brought in more Dorado and Tuna. Chito on Never Give Up also caught and released a Stripe Marlin with the Keener family.

The following day the Titan Group boarded for their final 2 charters with RedRum and RumRunnin. The Dorado stuck around overnight and the boys found them again early in the morning. Omar and Oscar ended their day with 7 Dorado and 1 Catch and release Marlin only to be outdone by Captain Jesus who ended his day with 8 Dorado and a Catch and Release Marlin. The Atkinson Party chose to fish inshore with Alex on El Nuevo and hooked into some nice Roosterfish!

We started our week with being lucky enough to host a large group from the office of the Coastal Conservation Association of Texas (CCA). The group split onto 3 boats for the morning. Ryan took one team out on 19’s Toy, I took Drew Adams, one of the Assistant Directors and his team out on Adrenaline and Chito and Danny took out the 3rd group on Never Give Up. We all had killer days on the water. Of course anytime Ryan and I are on the separate boats theres going to be some competition and all was neck and neck for the most part of the day. Each boat had bagged 8 Dorado pretty early in the day but somehow-someway Ryan was able to boat 2 Wahoo!!

The purpose of CCA is to advise and educate the public on conservation of marine resources. The objective of CCA is to conserve, promote, and enhance the present and future availability of those coastal resources for the benefit and enjoyment of the general public. On Tuesday a smaller group of CCA folks headed out with Gaba on 19’s Toy and kept busy all morning. The guys boated 6 nice sized Dorado and released around a dozen smaller ones while fishing the Pacific side. The fish were caught after a floating pallet was found about 13 miles from shore. Top Gun and JT Connaughton also caught dorado and 1 Jack Crevalle. Brandon Kolaja caught his first Stripe Marlin, 108”, while fishing with Alex on El Nuevo. ReelRum and RumRunning fished the same floating pallet as Gaba did and were able to pick up an additional 7 keeper Dorado! We all know how exciting it is to come across a large floating object in the deep blue sea!

Hurricane Dolores, a storm that developed 150 miles southwest of Cabo stirred up quite the chaos for the RedRum office and the rest of the boats in the Marina. The Port Captain declared the Port Closed for 3 days, Wednesday the 15 – Friday the 17th. Thank you to all of the anglers that were patient throughout the storm and cooperated with us and some moving around to fit schedules. These events are out of our control and as we see so many time, Mother Nature one-upped us!

Fishing resumed the morning of the 18th with the boys and the boats anxious to get back on the water!

Whether you are looking for something to do before heading back to school or sending your kids back to school check into coming down to Cabo and fishing with RedRum!! Nothing beats days out on the water down here!
