Some late summertime travelers visited Cabo this past week and found themselves fishing with RedRum under bright skies and fairly calm seas all week. The boys seemed to have split their time between heading up the Pacific side where cooler water began showing up and the Sea of Cortez side where the Marlin bite has continued to be productive.
Jon Kreig fished his second day with us on Sunday and caught and released a Striped Marlin while fishing aboard TantRum. Ramon kept his hot streak alive and caught and released another Blue Marlin while fishing with Scott Dalrymple on ReelRum. The Register party fishing El Nuevo took the prize with 1 Stripe Marlin and 1 Sailfish caught and released! Great work!
Monday brought more action and finally a couple of Dorado for most of the groups that showed up to the RedRum office bright and early! Herbert and Carol Ernst shared a special day on the water, Carol caught and released a nice Sailfish while Herbert caught and released his own Blue Marlin while fishing on TantRum. A late booking came in from Mr. David Wirth as he had heard all the buzz in town about Blue Marlin still being pretty accessible. He picked the right boat and the right captain, ReelRum and Ramon took care of his group landing a nice Blue Marlin on their trip out! Omar and Oscar were at it again catching and releasing a Striped Marlin with Jeff Szymanski and his friend Karen. Jesus and Jesus were one of the first boats this week to venture up the Pacific side in search of “something other than Marlin” according to Captain Jesus! Tom Sherry and his group headed out for a half-day charter on Rum Runnin and were happy to come back with something for the lunch and dinner table! Tuna and dorado provided for plenty of both! Alex and Charly added a 30# lb. dorado to the days catch as they fished with Danny Kelly and his family from North Carolina. This was the first trip of 3 for the Kelly’s. Captain Gaba fished with Ron Bailey and the rest of his party on 19′s Toy and were able to catch and release a Sailfish. Houston native, Michael Yokem brought his mother, Linda Taylor down to fish with RedRum for her birthday! They headed out for 2 Days and were able to catch and release a Striped Marlin and fought a Sailfish all the way to the boat for a “Mexican Release” according to Michael!
Chet Owens chartered ReelRum for half a day on Tuesday and was happy to walk away with a nice Wahoo as well as a smaller Yellowfin! Sean Ashely and his son Ian have been fishing with RedRum the last few years. They’re always a great time to be around, although they don’t have a lot to say at 5:30am we have a good time with the boys from Wichita Falls, Texas!! They planned a couple of days on the water with Omar and Oscar aboard RedRum. Ian was first up on day 1 and was able to catch and release a 250# Blue Marlin, his first! Congrats Ian! RumRunnin continued to fish up the Pacific side and caught a pair of Yellowfin Tuna as well as some smaller Bonita with the Piglia party! Ronald, Linda and Zoe Terry chartered El Nuevo for a full day venture and caught and released a Striped Marlin with Alex and Charly as did the Johnson group fishing aboard Top Gun.
ReelRum led the pack again on Wednesday as Ramon and Julian hosted Mike Klein and Don Hillstrand. At the end of the day the boys had reeled in a Sailfish for a release and lured a Wahoo and a Tuna in for dinner! Chris Pearson and Leah Houdmann caught and released big Sailfish with Omar and Oscar on RedRum and Jesus/Jesus of RumRunnin brought 3 more Yellowfin to the docks and almost hooked into a Marlin with the Prunty’s from Dallas, TX!
Carol and Herbert Ernst went out for their second day with TantRum. They decided on a half-day for day 2 but were not disappointed as Juan and Humberto were still able to get them into a Stripe Marlin, caught and released! Sean and Ian Ashley were back for their 2nd day on RedRum with Omar and Oscar. Although they didn’t catch and release another beautiful Blue Marlin, they were able to release a Striped Marlin and catch some Yellowfin and Dorado as well! Danny Kelly fished their 3rd and final day with Alex on El Nuevo, they caught and released a Sailfish as well as a Stripe Marlin! It was great meeting you guys, come back and see us next year! We’ll be ready for you and so will the fish!!
Leading into the weekend the fishing forecast looked promising; cooler water, solid temp breaks, a little wind and a lot of clients! Starting with a half-day charter on Friday, Jesus/Jesus of RumRunnin hooked up the Cuzen/Harness Group from Texas with 3 Tuna, bonita and a 180# lb Striped Marlin, all in only 5 hours! If one captain in our fleet could do it, it’s going to be Jesus on RumRunnin!!Tye Holloway brought his group off CCA anglers from Texas down and they fished El Nuevo for a couple of days. They ended day 1 with 6 Yellowfin and 1 Dorado! Chris McDonough traveled into town with his group to fish aboard our 35′ Cabos for a couple of days. The McDonough group was serious, not only about the fishing but about the competition they were having amongst the “teams”! Luckily each of the boats had some success! Day 1 the boys on 19′s Toy caught a nice wahoo as well as a few skipjack while the group that fished on Never Give Up caught a huge Wahoo, at least 5 feet, as well as 2 Yellowfin and a Striped Marlin to end the day.
We end our report with the 3 boats headed out yesterday. El Nuevo went looking for Billfish for the Holloway Group since they had their fill of Dorado and Tuna on day 1. Alex delivered, he was able to catch and release 1 Sailfish and 2 Striped Marlin! Captain Gaba caught 6 Yellowfin Tuna up on the Pacific side while working the Dos Arcos area and Sniper pulled in a nice Wahoo to end the week!
